Ancient Olympia is an archaeological site in the Peloponnese of southern Greece. Founded in the 8th century BCE, it became the primary sanctuary dedicated to Zeus, the king of the Greek gods.
The centerpiece of Olympia was the magnificent Temple of Zeus, housing one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World: the gold and ivory statue of Zeus, crafted by the sculptor Phidias.Apart from the Temple of Zeus, the site contains various other important structures such as the Temple of Hera, the Prytaneion, the Stadium, and the Gymnasium, each with its unique history and architectural significance.
