Our morning departure for Monemvasia will stop for a coffee in Gerakas (Ierax) a small beautiful seaside village of Peloponnese, which is literally built in a fjord! It was the naval station of the Byzantines to fight the Saracens, and the anchorage of passing ships to avoid the tempests, since the port of Gerakas is Pausania’s “Eflimenous Village”.

At the top of the hill are the ruins of the acropolis of the ancient city of Zarakas with its fortification wall, which was constructed in Hellenistic times. At the site of the city traces of habitation have been identified since prehistory.

We depart for Monemvasia, which is only 25 km away.
